Fire at carboard box manufacturing plant on Marcus Garvey Drive

A major fire is now raging at a cardboard box manufacturing plant on Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston.

It has not been ascertained how the blaze started.

The fire has resulted in a pile up of  traffic on Marcus Garvey Drive as motorists are being diverted.

 

UPDATE: The fire was eventually brought under control late afternoon.

Initially, the blaze was so extensive that at least 60 firefighters had to be deployed to bring it under control. 

In all, six fire engines from the Jamaica Fire Brigade and two water tenders from the oil refinery Petrojam were eventually deployed to the scene of the fire at 154 Marcus Garvey Drive.

Water was drawn from the sea as part of the effort put out the blaze, Emilio Ebanks, Public Relations Officer for the Jamaica Fire Brigade, explained on RJR's Beyond the Headlines.

The Fire Brigade was alerted to the fire at 3:34 p.m., Ebanks reported.
