Fire at Kingston Craft Market does major damage

A fire at the Kingston Craft Market on Thursday morning did extensive damage to a section of the building, resulting in 28 vendors suffering major losses.

The blaze, which occurred about 2:35, destroyed 18 stalls and all their goods.

A vendor, Carlene Bailey, told RJR News that she suffered more than $1 million in losses.

Meanwhile, Audrey Hinds, President of the Kingston Craft Market Association, is urging the authorities and Corporate Jamaica to assist the affected vendors.

She said the Urban Development Commission (UDC), owners of the property, have already visited and assessed the damage, while the operators of the market itself will conduct their own assessment.

Ms Hinds noted, however, that only a section of the market was damaged and as such, the rest of the market will be reopened on Friday for normal operations.

She said vendors who suffered losses will have to wait to know whether the UDC will provide compensation for the damage.

It has not yet been determined how the blaze started.
