Food for the Poor assists five non-violent offenders to spend Christmas at home

Sandra Ramsey, Prison Ministry Administrator at Food for the Poor

Five non-violent offenders are spending Christmas with their families this year after their fines were paid for by Food For the Poor.

The twice-yearly practice of the organisation has been ongoing for more than 10 years.

Food for the Poor says so far, it has enabled the release of 719 prisoners with minor offences.

Sandra Ramsey, Prison Ministry Administrator at Food for the Poor, said most of the offences are for breaches of the Road Traffic Act.

Ms Ramsey, who was speaking Tuesday on TVJ's Smile Jamaica programme, said Food for the Poor has paid the fines of mostly men, as the women have largely been locked up for drug offences.

She said the individuals are also assisted after their release from prison.
