Foreign Ministry receives more complaints from Jamaicans over treatment in Trinidad

More formal complaints have been received by the Ministry of  Foreign Affairs regarding the September 30 incident in which 13 Jamaicans were denied entry into Trinidad and Tobago.

State Minister Arnaldo Brown says seven complaints are now with the Ministry. Earlier this month, the Ministry reported that it had received only one. The complaints are being reviewed and will be addressed via diplomatic channels. He said they want a full brief of what happened and the treatment the Jamaicans received in order to raise the matter with their counterparts in Trinidad and Tobago.

Trinidad and Tobago's National Security Minister Gary Griffith has defended the actions of  immigration officials in denying entry to theJamaicans. He said the Jamaicans, who arrived at the Piarco International Airport, did not meet basic requirements for entry.

In the meantime, the Foreign Affairs Ministry remains concerned about how the Jamaicans were treated by Trinidadian immigration officials. Mr. Brown said it should be viewed against the background of  the Shanique Myrie case in Barbados.
