Former Acting Public Defender finds report on dead babies inadequate

More criticism has been leveled against the Office of the Public Defender's report on the deaths of several premature babies last year at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

Matondo Mukulu, former acting Public Defender, has rejected the conclusions in the report. He believes the document has several limitations which have affected its integrity.

The report, which was released on Friday, concluded that there was no evidence of medical negligence on the part of the staff at the University Hospital. But Mr. Mukulu argued that the evidence came from limited sources and said it does not address the issues faced by the parents of the babies.

Mr. Mukulu also outlined the specific issues about the report which have caught his attention. He argued that not enough explanation is given about the safety system and operating procedures at the hospital.
