Frosty Pod Rot disease affecting cocoa crop, says Agriculture Ministry

The Ministry of Agriculture is reporting the emergence of a disease affecting the cocoa crop known as Frosty Pod Rot.

This is the first time that the highly contagious disease has been confirmed in the Caribbean.

Addressing a news conference on Thursday, Agriculture Minister Karl Samuda said the presence of the disease was confirmed following tests by the Plant Quarantine Unit. It is concentrated in Clarendon.

Mr. Samuda says a cocoa farmer in the parish reported the fungal disease in late August.

The minister described the situation as grave since the disease has the potential to cause significant damage.
