Funds allocated to repair Tower Street prison

With the spotlight still on the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in Kingston following Friday's discovery of holes being dug in an apparent prison escape plot, funds have been allocated in the 2018/2019 Estimates of Expenditure for construction at the facility.

Some $82 million will be spent at the correctional centre for the construction of an external changing area utilising retrofitted containers and a new block for the mentally ill after the block which usually accomodates those prisoners was damaged by fire last year.

The government is facing increased pressure to take immediate steps to upgrade the dilapidated prison or construct a new facility.

Arlington Turner, Chairman of the Jamaica Federation of Corrections, told RJR News that the lobbying process will start with formal communication being made with the National Security Ministry about the matter.

The estimates of expenditure show that $26 million will also be spent to repair the inmate accommodation building at St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre.
