Furniture shortage at some schools just before new academic year

Paul-Davey Ashley, Senior Education Officer
The Education Ministry is reporting a shortage of furniture at some schools, with just a little more than one week to go before the start of the 2016/2017 academic year.

However, Paul-Davey Ashley, Senior Education Officer, has sought to assure the public that plans are underway to have the shortage addressed before schools reopen on September 5.

"The ministry is now preparing for back to school and we're doing critical repairs to buildings, infrastructure, roofs, bathrooms, and there are furniture needs," he acknowledged.

But his optimism in addressing these shortages was bolstered with Tuesday's donation of 1,000 desks and chairs by the Joseph Assignment Global Initiative (JAGI) to the Education Ministry.

Mr. Ashley said there are schools in dire need of furniture, particularly at the primary level, who could benefit.

"We are going to be looking at which are the schools with the greatest need and we're going to be using this gift of furniture to fill (that) gap," he said.

He was speaking on Tuesday at the handing over of the desks and chairs.
