Government working with JPS to address streetlight issues

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has said the Holness administration is working closely with the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) to address issues regarding streetlights.

Mr. McKenzie, who was speaking at a town hall meeting at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre in St. James on Wednesday, said the Government had taken note that street lighting is becoming a vexed issue in several communities and has to be addressed expeditiously.

He said in discussions with the Ministry of Finance, the decision was made to clear the debt with the JPS.

The Government has since settled the near $6 billion in arrears to the utility company.

McKenzie said, for the first time since the JPS has been in private hands, the Government is current with its monthly light bill payment.

However, the Local Government Minister said he has been informed that unscrupulous persons have been stealing some of the streetlights.

He is urging persons with information to contact the police.
