Gov't looking to CCTV cameras to enhance security in schools

Senator Ruel Reid

In the wake of recent incidents of violence involving students, the government is looking at installing Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in schools.

This is part of efforts to improve safety and discipline.

Education Minister Senator Ruel Reid, who addressed the issue at Wednesday's Jamaica House media briefing, said this would be achieved through a grant of US$3 million from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Senator Reid said the government will be taking a systematic approach to tackling indiscipline and issues of safety in schools.

"What I want is CCTV camera network right across the entire education system and that artificial intelligence system capability will allow... for you to be able to have accurate surveillance of the school, whether through weapons or any behaviours that are abnormal," he said.

Anchovy High

Meanwhile, the Education Minister has instructed Chief Education Officer Dr. Grace McLean to develop a plan to improve the management of Anchovy High School in St. James.

This follows Monday's incident at the institution where several female students clashed with the Dean of Discipline after he tried to break up a fight.

Speaking at the Jamaica House media briefing on Wednesday, Senator Reid said he has not received a comprehensive development plan from Anchovy High School with regards to improving its safety and security. However, if it is determined after an assessment that the school requires additional support, such as added personnel or fencing, the government will assist.

Senator Reid said based on a report from the school, Achovy High is suffering from management and accountability issues.

"Both students and staff need to display discipline, and therefore, you have order and control....and there needs to be a strong culture of accountability," the minister insisted.
