Gov't looking to get more wards of the State into foster homes

Floyd Green, State Minister in the Ministry of Youth, has announced that the government is looking at getting more children, who are in State care, placed in foster homes.

Children in State care are likely to develop more holistically when residing in a family setting, Mr. Green opined on Monday, adding that several wards of the State have indicated to him that they would like to live with foster parents.

Mr. Green was speaking at a special meeting with foster parents from the south-east and southern regions of the island.

The meeting, which was organised by the Child Development Agency (CDA), was the first in a series to address the concerns of foster parents.

Among the concerns cited by the foster parents were issues regarding the treatment of special needs children attending school, health insurance and the payment of various fees.

Mr. Green said some of the issues will be examined for speedy resolution.

The CDA has purview over 800 foster families across Jamaica.
