Gov't providing solar lights for 'energy poor households'

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

The Government is proposing to assist what it calls energy poor households by providing them with solar lighting.

Prime Minister Holness told the House of Representatives that the programme is being undertaken against the background of the number of persons who have died in household fires caused by open flame lighting such as candles and lamps.

He said an initial quantity of 5,000 solar lamps have already been secured and a system to identify and distribute these solar lights to needy households is being developed.

"This is a real opportunity for social enterprise to support the eco-system around the production, installation, user education servicing and recycling of these solar lamps," Mr. Holness argued. "To this end, I have directed the HOPE programme to develop a national service corps to support all elements of this programme and to work with existing entrepreneurs in this area," he declared.
