Gov't to resume wage talks with teachers next week

The Government of Jamaica has said it will resume wage talks with the Jamaica Teachers Assocation (JTA) next week.

The government made the statement on Thursday, ahead of the Friday deadline it was given by the association to set a date for when talks would resume.

JTA President Georgia Waugh Richards confirmed receipt of a letter from the Finance Ministry. She said the letter indicated that the government might be making an improved wage offer.

The Association has rejected the government's wage offer of a six per cent increase over two years.

The JTA, which represents the majority of teachers across the public school system, had warned that if there was no response by Friday, its action committee would be activated.
