There is to be more scrutiny of Government of Jamaica issued firearms.
Dr. Carl Williams, the country's Police Commissioner, writing in the latest Force Orders, stressed that this was in line with Standard Operating Procedures.
Commissioner Williams said all firearms held by the State are to be appropriately marked. This means that firearms also issued to members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) will be marked.
Commissioner Williams reminded members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) that the country is a signatory to the Cooperation of the General Secretariat of the Organisation of American States, which requires that all firearms held by the State be appropriately marked, among other requirements.
The JCF, JDF, Ministry of National Security and the Institute of Forensic Science and Legal Medicine will have responsibility to ensure the weapons are marked.
Senior Superintendent Glenford Hudson of the Police Services Branch will be responsible for coordinating the project.
