Ground broken for High Dependency Unit at Bustamante Hospital

Ground was broken Wednesday for the construction of a High Dependency Unit at the Bustamante Hospital for Children.
Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton, who delivered the keynote address at the ceremony, said the initiative seeks to alleviate some of  the serious challenges associated with pregnancy.
The High Dependency Unit is expected to result in improved newborn and emergency obstetric care as well as enhanced primary healthcare services for high-risk pregnant women.
Citing figures by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN), the Health Minister said in 2015, the maternal mortality rate was 87.1 per 100,000 live births, and the infant mortality rate was 22.2 per 1,000 live births.
Ground was recently broken for the construction of high dependency units at the St. Ann's Bay and Spanish Town hospitals.
