Hand foot and mouth outbreak not linked to drought

Education MInister - Ronald Thwaites

Education Minister Ronald Thwaites says information available to date is suggesting that the outbreak of  hand, foot and mouth disease, is not directly linked to the ongoing drought.

He is asserting that the disease has surfaced at schools which are adequately supplied with water.
At a press conference on Friday, Health Minister Dr. Fenton Ferguson, disclosed that the disease has been detected in ten parishes, with no reported cases in Trelawny, Hanover, Manchester and Clarendon.

Concern has been expressed that the lack of  water is contributing to the spread of  the illness, however, Thwaites says there is no supporting evidence for this theory.

"The schools which have been affected, have not been suffering from a shortage of water ...." Thwaites said

Proposal accepted
The Education Minister has accepted a proposal from the member of parliament for St Thomas Western, James Robertson, for the National Water Commission to invoke its K-Factor to secure better water supply.

The funds collected from the K-factor are used for capital rehabilitation programmes, mains replacement and other Non-Revenue Water reduction activities.

Robertson's proposal was for the funds to be used to assist schools which are struggling with water issues.
The Education Minister says this will be  pursued.
