Holness steers clear of query on whether National Security Minister will be replaced

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has shied away from a direct response to a query about whether National Security Minister Robert Montague is likely to be removed from the portfolio with the impending Cabinet reshuffle.

"Minister Montague has a very difficult job and he has developed a five pillar crime strategy that he has been executing. The results, obviously, will not materialise immediately, and yes, he has come under significant public pressure," said Mr. Holness during an interview with RJR News

The Prime Minister spoke more broadly about the reshuffle, saying there will be "a general change in the Cabinet, obviously because we are now at midterm."

"It's now time to evaluate individual performance versus expected achievements... We'll also have to evaluate performance against objectives that we need to achieve in order to present a menu of success to the public come the next election," he added.

The Prime Minister was also asked if there is a place in the reshuffled Cabinet for newly elected Member of Parliament for St. Andrew North Western Dr. Nigel Clarke. There has been public speculation that he may replace Audley Shaw as Finance Minister.

But again, Mr. Holness refrained from even hinting at any possible change to that portfolio.

Instead, he spoke highly of both men in question, noting that Dr. Nigel Clarke is "clearly someone with great capacity who will contribute significantly to the country" and that "Minister Shaw has been a long standing fighter for the party and has done very well in his second go around as Minister of Finance."
