Increase in reported cases of Hand Foot and Mouth disease

Dr. Fenton Ferguson

An additional 125 cases of  the highly contagious hand, foot and mouth disease have been reported by the Ministry of  Health. As of October 5 there are reports of 438 cases up from 313 on Friday.

Health Minister, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, told the House of  Representatives on Tuesday that the disease has been detected at 144 schools.
"Some scohols have reported two cases and some even a single case of illness. With this in mind it would not be practical to close every school with reported cases. .....we have been working very closely with the Ministry of Education and school administrators...." he said.

The Health Minister is confident of measures that  have been implemented will help contain the spread of  hand, foot and mouth disease.

He said Health Departments have been conducting investigations at schools where cases have been reported:.
