Informal settlers protest removal from lands in Westmoreland

MP Wykham McNeill

Informal settlers in the communities of Little Bay and Brighton in  Westmoreland are protesting against their forceful removal from lands they say they have occupied for more than 40 years.

The residents on Monday afternoon blocked the Little London main road after they received notice of removal and demolition.

Member of Parliament Wykeham McNeill said he has written to the Prime Minister to intervene after the last attempt to recover the lands ended in bloodshed.

He said following a community meeting last Friday, he received the names of about 130 people who are affected by the retaking of the lands.

The MP said he will again communicate with Prime Minister Andrew Holness and ministers Horace Chang and Robert Montague for there to be a solution to the dispute.
