Winston Harrison, CEO of National Rums of Jamaica, which manages the Long Pond distillery

Production at the Long Pond distillery in Trelawny has been halted as an investigation is carried out into Monday's fire.

Clean up operations are still underway.

The fire, which started about midday on the property which also houses the sugar factory, destroyed 65,000 litres of rum and sugar cane.

Rum, as well as raw material - the liquid being fermented to be converted into rum - which were being housed in two separate buildings, were destroyed.

Winston Harrison, Chief Executive Officer of National Rums of Jamaica, which manages the Long Pond distillery, told RJR News that the fire started in the cane fields, however, the cause is not known.

He said it may be another two weeks before production resumes; by which time, he hopes the investigation into the fire can be completed.

Mr. Harrison also revealed that the bagasse dump located at the Long Pond sugar factory is still on fire.

Figherfighters are working to bring it under control.

The property is insured.
