Jamaica ratifies ILO Domestic Workers Convention

Jamaica has ratified the International Labour Organization (ILO) Domestic Workers Convention.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Thursday morning announced that the Jamaican Government has signed the instrument of ratification of ILO Convention C 189.

The instrument is in the process of being deposited at the International Labour Office through Jamaica’s Embassy in Geneva.

Mr. Holness made the announcement while participating in deliberations on a report by the United Nations on Economic Empowerment of Women at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The prime minister said Jamaica is committed to protecting the rights of the most vulnerable and ensuring the welfare of domestic workers.

Mr. Holness also recognised the presence of Shirley Pryce at the UN.

Ms Pryce, President of the Jamaica Household Workers Association, has been a staunch advocate for women’s empowerment and the rights of domestic workers in Jamaica.
