Jamaica to help fight Libyan slave trade

Kamina Johnson Smith, Leader of Government Business

The Jamaican Government will join international partners in helping to eliminate the slave trade in Libya.

In a statement to the Senate Friday morning, Leader of Government Business Kamina Johnson Smith, said Jamaica, like many other countries, is appalled by reports of persons being sold as labourers in slave auctions.

"We note and welcome, even with caution, announcements emerging from the African Union/European Union summit in Cote d'Ivoire... where specific actions are to be taken to address the situation of migrants in Libya," she said.

She said with the observation of International Day for the abolition of Slavery on Saturday, Jamaica will be placing focus on assisting Libya.

But she also called for Jamaicans to identify and try to address issues that are plaguing Jamaica itself.
