Jamaican gets over 3 years in US prison for scamming

A Jamaican man has been sentenced to 38 months in a US prison for lottery scamming after the judge in the case added five months to the recommended sentence.

A report in the West Virginia media said Senior U.S. District Judge Irene Keeley does not usually divert upward from recommended sentencing ranges determined by federal guidelines in conjunction with plea agreements.

However, it says she made an exception in the case of  34 year old Zicko Peterkin, of  Montego Bay, St. James who committed what Judge Keeley deemed an especially heinous crime.

It says the five months tacked on by the judge was probably all she could add without getting reversed on appeal by the Fourth Circuit. Court documents say Peterkin will be deported once he's released from prison. If  he's ever returned to the United States, Peterkin will face 3 years of  extended court supervision.

The judge also ordered full restitution, but with the defendant only able to pay 5 dollars a month while behind bars, and headed back to Jamaica when he's done, it's unlikely much will be collected. Peterkin pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy to commit wire fraud amounting to about 250 thousand US dollars.
