A Jamaican was on Wednesday sentenced to eleven years in prison in the British Virgin Islands after being found guilty of raping an underage girl.
A jury earlier this month found 39 year old Raymond Harrison guilty of rape, unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 16, and possession of child pornography. A sentencing hearing was held last Friday, where Senior Crown Counsel Valston Graham pointed out several factors he said aggravated Harrison’s offence. He said the victim is now 15 years old but has the cognitive function of a 7-year-old. He also said because the defendant was close to her family, his crime constituted a major breach of trust.
The prosecutor added that Harrison used a knife, and some of the offences were repeated. Defence attorney Patrick Thompson laid out what he described as mitigating factors for his client, including his previously clean record and the fact that he’s a married father of four children.
