Jamaica's press freedom ranking improves

Jamaica has moved up two places in the 2018 World Press Freedom Index.

The country now ranks sixth out of 180 countries.

Jamaica is the only country from the region in the top 10.

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States ranks at 35, while Trinidad and Tobago comes in at 39.

Norway received the best ranking followed by Sweden.

The Index compiled by the global media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, was released Wednesday.

The group said Jamaica ranks among the countries that most respect freedom of information.

It said the occasional physical attacks on journalists must be offset against this, but no serious act of violence or threat to media freedom has been reported since February 2009.

The group said that month saw two cases of abuse of authority by the police in Kingston.

It also lauded the law decriminalizing defamation passed by the house of representatives in 2013 which it described as a step in the right direction.
