JCC issues statement on sex case involving Moravian pastor

The Jamaica Council of Churches (JCC) on Tuesday issued a statement on the case involving Rupert Clarke, Pastor of the Nazareth Moravian Church in Manchester, who was charged last week with raping a 15-year-old girl in St. Elizabeth.

The council said while it awaits the outcome of the legal process, it does not support or condone the abuse of children or the misconduct of its leaders.

The Council of Churches added that the outrage regarding the matter has served as a reminder to the church of the high standard with which it and its leaders are held by the society and the burden of responsibility in ensuring that it lives up to those expectations.

The organisation appealed to church leaders to be responsible in the use of power and influence that come with the pastoral call and office and lead lives of integrity.
