JCF finalising arrangements to purchase body cameras

Major General Antony Anderson

Arrangements are being made to finalise the purchase of hundreds of body cameras for the police.

Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson said the process, which started last May, has been stalled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commissioner Anderson said, since last month, the police have been testing various models of body cameras "and that has allowed us to evaluate things like how rugged they are, whether the clips will break or not, are they suitable fror our circumstances."

"Also how we capture the data from these body-worn cameras is significant. We have brought in a server for that purpose. It's here in Jamaica. We just haven't commissioned it yet. The people who are supposed to come in and commission it have not been able to do so yet because our borders are closed," he revealed.

The issue of body cameras again came to the fore in the wake of last week's killing of Susan Bogle at her house in August Town, St. Andrew.

Miss Bogle was killed during an alleged shootout involving members of the security forces and gunmen.
