JCS, JCTC back government's plan to ban tobacco promotion

The Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) and the Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control (JCTC) have endorsed plans by the Government to enact legislation in 2019 to ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorships.

Yulit Gordon, Executive Director of the JCS, said the long-awaited law will boost the country's efforts to discourage tobacco use.

Statistics show that legislation is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce the demand for tobacco products, and is recognised as a tobacco control best practice.

Addressing a JIS Think Tank on Tuesday, Mrs. Gordon said while there has been compliance with the Tobacco Regulations of 2013, there continue to be breaches in relation to smoke-free environments.

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton, in announcing the legislative measure recently, said it will require warning labels outlining the consequences of consuming tobacco.
