JCTU urges parents, gov't to contribute more to schools

Helene Davis Whyte

There is a call for parents and the government to start contributing more to schools.

Helene Davis Whyte, President of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU), said the money the government provides to schools is inadequate.

Speaking at the JTA's annual conference on Monday, Mrs Davis Whyte also urged parents to pay school fees.

The government currently pays $19,000 annually per student.

Some school administrators argue that this is inadequate and Mrs Davis Whyte agrees. She contended tha the $19,000 being provided by the government is not even $7,000 per school term, which ideally cannot be used to cover all the schools' costs, such as electricty, water, and general maintenance.

While she agreed that not all parents will be able to afford to pay more, she dismissed the notion that had been expressed by the education minister that prinicipals and teachers are extortionists for requesting additional funds.

Education Minister Senator Ruel Reid is to address the conference on Wednesday.
