JTA President-Elect installed, despite objection

Norman Allen, Principal of Four Paths Primary and Junior High School in Clarendon, was on Friday proclaimed President-Elect of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) despite an objection from a Trustee of  the organisation.

The proclamation followed the lifting of an injunction by the Court of  Appeal on October 17. During the ceremony, JTA President Doran Dixon reiterated that the proclamation does not prejudice any member, including the defeated candidate, Georgia Waugh Richards, from proceeding with voiding the election which is now before the court. The trial is scheduled for next May.

Mr. Dixon’s comments followed an objection from senior Trustee, Woodburn Miller, who contended that the calling of the special Conference to proclaim Mr. Allen was unconstitutional.

According to Mr. Miller, the JTA's rules were specific in respect of the number of days notice that should be given for the holding of a regular meeting of  General Council. He also said the proclamation exercise was not an emergency.

However, in dismissing the Trustee’s position, Mr. Dixon asserted that, as President, the constitution gives him the right to exercise his judgment in the calling of meetings.
