JTA rejects government's wage increase offer

Jamaica’s public school teachers have rejected the government's latest wage offer of 16 per cent increase over a four-year contract period, by a vote of 313 to 37.

The rejection came at a special meeting of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) held on Saturday at Wolmer’s Boys School in Kingston.

As a consequence, the executive of the JTA will be seeking to return to the bargaining table with the Ministry of Finance & the Public Service.

The Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions, an umbrella organization for most of the country’s trade unions, has already accepted the same terms which the teachers have now rejected, although some of the member unions have refused to sign the agreement.
