Judge criticised for lengthy sentence imposed on Vybz Kartel, co-accused

An attorney in the appeal case involving entertainer Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adijah Palmer, and his co-accused, has criticised the trial judge for the lengthy sentencing imposed on the men.

Robert Fletcher, the attorney representing Kahira Jones, said the judge's method was faulty as he failed to apply the right principles on sentencing.

Mr. Fletcher argued that the trial judge did not gather information in respect to a social inquiry report on the men to come to an appropriate position on the sentencing scale.

He said while the judge had antecedents on the men, that was not enough.

He reasoned that a social inquiry report would provide much deeper information on the men as it contains information from community members.

He further pointed out that Kahira Jones has had no previous convictions.

Vybz Kartel, Jones, Shawn Campbell and Andre St. John were convicted for the murder of Clive "Lizard" Williams on August 16, 2011.
