The police are questioning the driver of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus involved in Friday morning's incident in which a child died after being run over by the vehicle.

The mishap occurred about 7:50 at the intersection of Meadowvale Avenue and the Gregory Park main road in Portmore.

Senior Superintendent Clive Blair, Commanding Officer for the St. Catherine South Police Division, told RJR News the incident occurred when the driver stopped to pick up passengers.

"Immediately after the passengers boarded the vehicle, the driver drove off the bus. Within a few seconds, he was stopped by passengers, who informed him that a student fell from the bus," SSP Blaire revealed.

"From information received, the bus had ran (sic) over the student and a motorist who was passing by, saw what happened and took the student to the Spanish Town Hosiptal where he was pronounced dead," he added.

The name of the child has not yet been released by the police.
