JUTC ends dedicated bus lane on Mandela Highway

Cecil Thoms, JUTC's Communication Manager

Commuters travelling on the state owned Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses should brace themselves for increased travel time, following the decision by the company to discontinue the dedicated bus lane from Spanish Town to Kingston, starting today.

The JUTC said the improvement work on the Mandela Highway makes it unnecessary to continue the controversial exclusive bus lanes.

Cecil Thoms, JUTC's Communication Manager, said the decision to do away with the exclusive lanes also followed discussions with the National Works Agency (NWA).

The discontinuation of the bus lanes means all JUTC buses out of Spanish Town will traverse the regular lanes.

Mr. Thoms appealed to persons to to be patient as significant delays could develop.

"We understand that you want to reach where you're going in a reasonable time, but you just have to suffer a little bit of inconvenience," he said.

He said the company will review its decision in the next few months.

Expansion work on the Mandela Highway is expected to be completed in 2018.
