JUTC's internal audit a "smoke screen" - says former Chairman

Former Chairman of  the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) Reverend Garnet Roper, has described the internal audit conducted at the State-run entity as a smoke screen.

The audit, which was ordered by the current board, revealed procurement breaches, a breakdown in security, massive overtime payments among other issues.

Roper asserts that the audit is to deflect attention from existing problems at the JUTC. He says the company is rolling out fewer buses.

"....I sympathise with the minister, he has no letter of credit, he has no arrangements to get spare parts and the buses are stopping ....he has a tough hand to draw..." Roper said.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister, Mike Henry, says Cabinet has approved a programme to restore 200 JUTC buses.

"Under the new management, we have developed new relationships with company that will supply parts. This has led to an orderly supply of parts since late August, with the arrangements set to continue,   because we are aware that we must save and maintain our assets or every year we will be faced with the gap widening as to the quantity of buses that are needed," he said.

According to the Transport Minister, the JUTC managed to roll-out 430 of  the 470 buses for the new school term.
