Kaliese surprisingly misses the cut

Jamaica's Commonwealth Games 400m hurdles champion Kaliese Spencer has missed out on the IAAF women's shortlist for the female athlete of the year award.

New Zealand's Valerie Adams, who won Commonwealth Games gold in the shot put, Ethiopian 3,000m runner Genzebe Dibaba, 23, and Dutch sprinter and Heptathlete Dafne Schippers, 22 are the three  short-listed.

Meanwhile, American sprinter Justin Gatlin has also not made the three-man short-list for the 2014 World Athlete of the Year.

The 32-year-old Gatlin, who has served two doping bans, was one of 10 contenders for the IAAF award.

Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim , French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie and Kenya's Dennis Kimetto, the world marathon record holder, are the three finalists.

Gatlin has this year run the fastest 100m and 200m by a man in his thirties.

The 2004 100m Olympic champion failed drug tests in 2001 and 2006, the second of which initially brought him an eight-year ban which was halved on appeal.

The men's and women's winners will be announced at the World Athletics Gala in Monaco on November 21.
