Kern Spencer attends court in tax compliance drive

Former Member of Parliament Kern Spencer was among several persons who appeared in Court on Thursday in relation to a tax compliance drive led by the Tax Office and the St. Elizabeth Parish Council.

Spencer, the operator of cable company, BOJ TV confirmed his court appearance in what he said was an effort to ensure his tax liabilities remain current.

“I had a court date a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately I was unable to attend, and the judge said the director of the entity needed to be in court. So an order was made for me to attend court, which I have not received as yet, but I made my way to court even without receiving the order – just to sort out the situation.”

Spencer says he updated the Magistrate on the status of his tax obligations and  produced his Tax Compliance Certificate, which proved that payments were honoured.

In recent months, the Tax Administration of Jamaica (TAJ) has been going after individuals and businesses that are in delinquent in paying income tax and other tax liabilities.
