Kingston Craft Market damage estimated at $12.8m

Audrey Hinds, President of the Kingston Craft Market Association

The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) says damage to the Kingston Craft Market following April's fire has been estimated at $12.8 million.

The fire destroyed 18 shops and left 28 vendors suffering losses.

The UDC told RJR News that the Jamaica Fire Brigade has not yet been able to determine the cause of the blaze.

However, the Corporation said it is taking steps to prevent another fire at the craft market. This includes the installation of a fire detection system as well as other emergency response systems at the facility.

Meanwhile, Audrey Hinds, President of the Kingston Craft Market Association, said the UDC has provided shops at the facility for vendors to sell their goods.

However, she said sales at the market have dipped since the fire because shoppers do not realise the market is still open. She attributed this to the fact that many of the entrances that were used by customers were damaged in the fire and have since been blocked to prevent entry.
