The Seismic Research Centre (SRC) at the University of the West Indies says a lack of funding for further testing on the Kick'em Jenny submarine volcano is a matter of concern for researchers.
Seismologist Dr Joan Latchman, of the Seismic Centre, has reported that the volcano, off Grenada’s northern coast, has gone quiet after two eruptions last month. She explained on Monday that a quiet level of activity is usually the case after an eruption.
Dr. Latchman explained that a volcano can grow in size, depending on the eruptions, and therefore testing is required to properly monitor it.
She added however that testing is expensive and the SRC does not have the funding to conduct the required scientific research.
The Seismic Research Centre is the body responsible for the monitoring of earthquake, tsunami and volcanic activity in the Eastern Caribbean.
