The umbrella body for Lay Magistrates islandwide has responded to recent reports involving the conduct of some Justices of the Peace
The Lay Magistrates Association of Jamaica is calling for strong action to be taken against JPs who breach established rules regarding their conduct.
Last weekend, Justice Minister Delroy Chuck disclosed that a gangster has been issuing instructions to an unnamed JP, who is now under investigation.
In a release last evening, the Association said it condemns the action of JPs who allow themselves to be controlled by gangsters.
It also notes that collection of payment for services rendered and the sale of government documents, such as passport application forms, are also breaches which will only bring dishonour to the office of Justice of the Peace.
The association is calling for honest Jamaicans to report these Justices of the Peace.
It says it will not accept JPs within its ranks who continue to bring the office into disrepute.
