Legislation governing National Family Planning amended

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health  Dr. Kevin Harvey says the Government has amended legislation which governs the National Family Planning Board, to make it more aligned with the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) principles.

According to Harvey, the amended legislation will allow a person with HIV and a representative of  the Ministry of  Education to serve on the Board.

In addition, the private sector will now be represented on the Board to make it more broad-based, in keeping with international standards.

The National Family Planning Board has authority to provide sex education to all groups, and coordinate the work of  civil society and the government on matters related to family planning and sex education.

Harvey said the project coordinating unit in the Health Ministry is also undergoing changes, with the National HIV/STI Programme now falling under the purview of  the office of  the Permanent Secretary.
