Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has called for strong action to deal with the theft of streetlights.
Speaking on Wednesday at a town hall meeting at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre in St. James, Mr. McKenzie revealed that several of the newly installed LED streetlights have been stolen.
He said culprits are reportedly taking down the lights with the excuse that they need to be repaired.
He is urging persons with information on the theft of streetlights to contact the police.
"We don't need to take down the light off the pole to repair the light. So, anybody who you see doing that, call the police, because it's a thief.... And the government can't spend that amount of money to wipe off the debt and then in agreement with the Jamaica Public Service to put up new lights, and then the people who are to benefit from the lights turn around in stealing the lights," he argued.
The Government has settled its near $6 billion in arrears to the utility company.
Mr. McKenzie said, for the first time since the JPS has been in private hands, the Government is current with its monthly light bill payment.
