Long term plan outlined to deal with fumes at Cornwall Regional

The Health Ministry's technical team has outlined aspects of the long term plan for the Cornwall Regional Hospital, which is trying to deal with the noxious fumes emanating from sections of the facility.

Rashidah Khan Haqq, the ministry's Environmental Solution Consultant, said policy changes and a combination of methods will be used to permanently tackle the problem.

Mrs Khan Haqq, said the policy changes are imminent along with other measures which will also need immediate implementation.

"We start with the evacuation or the relocation of certain services off those affected hospital floors, which is the first to third floors. Areas that we are not able to relocate will be isolated and a temporary ventilation be placed in those areas," she outlined Tuesday on RJR's Beyond The Headlines.

"There is also a plan to have a chemical management policy to be developed for the hospital that needs to be done. The permanent solution is to have a design for a ventilation system that takes into consideration all the current uses of the hospital," she added.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry representative was adamant that the situation facing Cornwall Regional is not the same as what is described as "sick building syndrome".

"A sick building syndrome is one where you really don't know what are the causes. (But) I think we do have an understanding of the issues and we do have the team and we are now in the process to try to rectify the problem," she argued.

"There are numerous things - poor maintenance, age of the building, current practices within the space - that all contribute to the problem, and I think if we tackle them in a systematic way by prioritising and using the information and the technology, I don't think we should have a problem in trying to solve the problem," insisted Mrs Khan Haqq.
