Lottery Scam taskforce to be reinstated in western Jamaica

The Police High Command is to reinstate the anti lottery scam taskforce in western Jamaica to help curtail the flare up in violence in St. James and other areas.

Following a tour of some of the trouble spots, Police Commissioner Dr. Carl Williams made the announcement at a news conference on Sunday, held following a tour of some areas in the parish

According to Williams detectives will be coming from the Corporate Area to help pursue the criminals.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who was also in attendance, responded to calls for a State of Emergency by saying that it is not a tool to be deployed at this time as the police and army are capable of responding to the situation at this time .

Concerning calls for a State of Emergency, the government is being encouraged to take that approach.

The latest plea is from attorney at law Hugh Wildman .

"The state of affairs in Montego Bay is a clear attack on law and order . It is not just the random killings ....the gunmen are really attacking the state. The state is being challenged. When you have that state of affair , it seems to be that we would have established a state of emergency,"said Wildman who was a guest on That's a Rap.

His views were shared by Social Activist and Publisher Latoya West-Blackwood who blamed the authorities for failing to eliminate the lottery scam at its infancy.

"Various social interventions have been ongoing in communities such as Flanker. But those have to be supported by tough action that gets to the heart of the process. Apart from the regular scammer profiles that we have been looking at, what about the other players that have been enabling the scamming to escalate  to the point where we have well equipped criminals who are very organised and are basically reigning terror on citizens," she said.
