Man to be charged in connection with St James crime surge

The police are reporting that they intend to lay charges against a man they consider a major contributor to the violence affecting sections of  St James.

He's one of  two persons in custody.

Head of  the St James Police, Senior Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, says the charges relate to some of  the major shootings which have taken place in and around Montego Bay.

It was announced yesterday that the National Reserves were called out to join forces with the police in an attempt to restore order in sections of  St. James.  The flare up has left several persons dead and others injured over the past 72 hours.
Nesbeth says the men have been on the police radar for sometime.
"I am confident that he will be charged ..... one of them is a very high profile individual who has been creating mayhem in the St. James division for years and was seemingly untouchable - well we have him now."

Nesbeth, in an interview with Beyond the Headlines also confirmed  that there was a recent withdrawal of  some personnel but based on the threat level there will be a significant increase in man power.

"That is being given attention as we have a flood of police officers and the military in more numbers , so we are able to control the spaces in a better way. Going forward, we will definitely need more police and the authorities are working hard to have that satisfied. We are hoping to have a mobile reserve type setting for the western region ....I'm sure that will come in tune before the end of the year."

He added that plans are in place  for medium term intervention in St. James, that are designed to develop more meaningful resolution to the problems plaguing crime hot spots.
