A man who allegedly defrauded the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation of more than $1.4 million has been arrested.
It is reported that on October 2, the man went to a bank in St. Catherine to encash a cheque for $95,000.
The bank reportedly called the municipal corporation for verification and was told the cheque was not issued.
The police took the man into custody.
The municipal corporation later discovered that two cheque books were missing from its vault.
Further investigations revealed that sixteen cheques from the books were encashed at various banks in Kingston and St. Catherine.
All sixteen cheques were for $95,000 each.
Following the discovery of the missing cheque books, the municipal corporation reported the matter to the Morant Bay Police who are investigating a case of simple larceny.
The police are expecting to make more arrests in the case.
