A member of the high powered legal team in the Mario Deane beating death says relatives and members of the public are depending on Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) to ensure that justice is served.
Addressing a press conference on the eve of the autopsy on Deane, Professor at Miami University and Attorney Jasmine Rand, confirmed that she has offered her services pro bono.
Rand says she was moved by the Jamaican support during the Trayvon Martin case, and saw it as an opportunity to give back and stand by Deane's relatives, as well as assist their legal team.
“I am here today to call upon INDECOM to conduct a fair investigation, to shed truth and light on the death of Mario Deane, to bring sine justice to this family, but not just this family but the citizens of Jamaica who have too long suffered from police corruption and police brutality
Rand also used the press conference to call for other members of the international community to stand in solidarity.
She added that the issues surrounding Deane's death are not only for Jamaica and the US but also an international human rights matter.
“There are leaders from other nations that will use their voices to stand in solidarity with the people of Jamaica to send a message to the world and to many of our leaders that international cooperation and collective action has the ability to ensure that human rights are upheld in various nation states,” she said.
