Maritime Authority urges caution for people travelling by boat to offshore cays

The Maritime Authority of Jamaica has urged vigilance over the Easter holiday period as many Jamaicans travel by boat to offshore cays.

The Authority said travellers should use only vessels that are registered and licensed by it to carry passengers.

It said the person steering the vessel must engage travellers in a safety brief before the start of a voyage.

In addition, life jackets must be properly fitted and worn by all passengers while onboard the vessel.

The warning from the Maritime Authority of Jamaica comes four months after a vessel sank off the coast of Port Royal in December.

Two of the individuals died.

Audit findings in January revealed that of 82 boats operating in Port Royal and Portmore, only three were licensed to carry passengers.
