Matthew has strengthened to a major Hurricane while moving west-south westward over the Caribbean Sea.
The Category 3 hurricane is forecast to strengthen during the next 48 hours.
In the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the centre of Matthew is located 800 kilometres South East of Kingston.
Matthew has maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometres per hour.
A hurricane watch may be required for Jamaica later on Friday.
A westward motion at a slower forward speed is expected Friday evening and Friday night. A turn toward the west-northwest is forecast by Saturday night, followed by a turn toward the northwest by early Sunday.
The Meteorological Service says Jamaica remains under a severe weather alert. It says based on the current forecast, Jamaica should begin feeling the effects of Hurricane Matthew as early as Sunday.
