Michael Misick arrested in South America

Former Premier of the Turks and Ciacos Islands (TCI), Michael Misick, has been arrested in Brazil.

Mr. Misick was arrested this morning by the Brazilian Federal Police in Rio de Janeiro.

He was detained as result of an international arrest warrant issued by Interpol and further warrant issued by Brazilian Supreme Court.

Mr Misick faces a number of serious charges relating to corruption and maladministration in TCI, a British Overseas Territory.

Mr. Misick was the country’s Premier until allegations of widespread corruption led the United Kingdom to impose direct rule on the islands in the summer of 2009.  Self government was recently restored following elections last month.
